The Alaska Nurses Association and Alaska School Nurses Association are jointly providing a free online school nurse orientation class. This will be asynchronous (on your own), opening June 7, 2021 and closing on July 30, 2021. This class will be for new school nurses, school nurses who would like a refresher, or those nurses interested in school nursing.
Basic skills to be covered include standards of school nursing practice, legal aspects of school nursing including 504's and IEP's, students with mental and physical special health care needs, assessment of students with acute injuries and illnesses, growth and development preschool through adolescence, students with chronic conditions including diabetes, asthma, allergies, seizures, neurodevelopmental disorders, trauma informed care and the management of the school nurse office.
The required text will be the 3rd edition of "School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text” by Selekman, Shannon and Yonkaitis and is available online at UAA Consortium Library. Optional text is "Managing Chronic Health Needs inChild Care and Schools" by Donoghue and Kraft.
This class will offer a total of 30 contact hours. There will be required readings of 50-75 pages per week as part of your contact hours, as well as discussion questions to answer and post-tests. All modules must be completed on the learning management system to receive contact hours. Please register by June 30, 2021.
There will be an optional live virtual meet and greet for participants on June 8, 2021 at 10 a.m.
