The Alaska Nurses Association and Alaska School Nurses Association are jointly providing a free online school nurse orientation class. This will be asynchronous (self-guided).  Registration is open for participants to complete the course 12 weeks from the registration on the Thinkific link below.  This class is for new school nurses, school nurses who would like a refresher, or those nurses interested in school nursing.

Basic skills covered include:

  • Standards of school nursing practice
  • Legal aspects of school nursing including 504's and IEP's
  • Students with mental and physical special health care needs
  • Assessment of students with acute injuries and illnesses
  • Growth and development preschool through adolescence
  • Students with chronic conditions including diabetes, asthma, allergies, seizures, & neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Trauma informed care
  • Management of the school nurse office.

The required text will be the 3rd edition of "School Nursing: A Comprehensive Text” by Selekman, Shannon and Yonkaitis and is available online at UAA Consortium Library or Amazon.  Optional text is "Managing Chronic Health Needs in Child Care and Schools" by Donoghue and Kraft.

This class offers a total of 30 contact hours. The required reading is 50-75 pages per week, so plan wisely the 12-week completion time. It is recommended that participants receive the textbook prior to registering. All the modules must be completed on the learning management system to receive contact hours.  We encourage you to allow yourself one week per chapter as the reading is quite vigorous, which allowed us to offer such robust contact hours.
